EXGOMI™ Machina X Mk 1
Sculpture and Image Series, 2021

A constantly growing abundance of hard rubbish, e-waste and discarded materials (much of which is repurposable, repairable or working) has led to the genesis of EXGOMI™. These scraps of discarded electronic and consumer goods have been collected, modified and assembled to be reconfigured with new meaning and purpose. The process of altering existing structures into new objects, subverts the previous forms and associations, providing the viewer with a new visual narrative.

EXGOMI™ is an ongoing exploration of transforming existing physical forms into new works and provides a framework to develop and share select works from my sculptural practice. The project will slowly expand as I try new approaches to create sculptures and develop new ways to document and share them. New work can be nested under the name EXGOMI™ — meaning out of rubbish or from junk — by adding the prefix ‘ex’ meaning: out of; from to the Japanese word ‘gomi’ meaning: rubbish; trash; garbage (as referred to by William Gibson in Mona Lisa Overdrive).

This initial series of images captures the first prototype of EXGOMI™ Machina X Mk 1, a sculptural robot project that has been in development since 2015. While some components may be identifiable in its final form, Machina X Mk 1 is an accumulation of many unknown components
